Working with children never gets boring! They say some of the funniest, most random things and I love it! Christmas always provokes some great insights and comments. Here are a few of my favourites.
One young man, of about 6 had been learning about the birth of Jesus and the story of the nativity. He had drawn a beautiful picture of the manger with many figures in. We asked him to tell us about the picture and who he had drawn; there was of course baby Jesus, his mummy and daddy, a sheep or two and a donkey, Father Christmas, Father Christmas’ brother and the three queens! That picture took pride of place on the wall.
My own son (who’s 5 1/2) this year was asking about Christmas and the nativity. He knew it was about the birth of Jesus but was asking good questions about why we have a Christmas tree and what other religions do at Christmas. I was trying to explain that the important part to remember was about being with the ones you love and celebrating and being thankful for all the things we have to which he replied “and presents”!
Helen’s daughter (at 3 and a bit) was playing being Father Christmas this year and asked Helen what she wanted. The conversation went like this:-
Helen: I would like some chocolate please
A: No we haven’t got any
Helen: Ok, I’ll have a book then
A: No we haven’t got any
Helen: oh, what have you got then Father Christmas?
A: Only trains, Yo yo’s or sandwiches!
My favourite was a young man I worked with, who had quite a significant language disorder. He was about 8 at the time and was retelling the story of the nativity. In his version Rosie and Jim were travelling on a donkey to Birmingham to find some where to stay as there was no room at the hotel!
I hope everyone has a great holiday and gets to spend time with the ones they love – and presents!
