Well I guess the best place to start is with why we are blogging?
We have both been working in busy clinics and schools for many years and find that we are always on the lookout for new resources and ideas. It’s a bit like Chinese whispers with therapy resources- someone discovers something great and starts using it, but often other therapists don’t know about it, even in our own departments, until someone spots it, or another therapist happens to mention it in discussion. There is so much great stuff out there to use in therapy and a lot of it is pretty cheap, or even free! We wanted to have a place where we could share exciting things we’ve found with others, and hopefully where people can share great things they’ve found with us too! We hope to make some resources of our own too and share those here.
We also know that there are many parents out there who have concerns about their child’s speech and language development, and teachers who are concerned about children in their classes. Some of those children will be seeing a speech and language therapist and some will not, but many people in the country will be going for my favourite option when I want information about something and “googling” it! Advice from the internet is never a substitute for input from a speech and language therapist but waits can be long and we have found that people want ideas of things to try while they’re waiting. There is some good information out there, but there’s always a need for more. We hope that we can guide you to some good information that is already out there on the Internet, and provide some of our own advice too.
We’ve found lots of great American blogs which are doing both of these things really well (and some of these have led us to some great things that we’ll share with you) but there don’t seem to be too many therapists in the UK blogging yet! (If you are a UK SLT who is blogging and we don’t know about you, do let us know!). Hence we came to our name “speechbloguk”.
So now you know who we are and why we’re here. Do check back another day for some ideas and advice!
